How to Choose a Redesign Template: A 5-Minute Guide

You have more than 6,600 templates to choose from, with more added daily. This is not a problem. This guide makes the choice fast and final.

Quick answer

Focus on 3 things: the header layout, the hero section style, and the overall color palette. Our process lets you change content, images, and individual sections later, so the initial template choice is about structure, not specifics.

Choice paralysis is a design problem. Faced with more than 6,600 templates, the instinct is to over-analyze. We designed our process to prevent this. Choosing your template should take five minutes.

A traditional website redesign is a slow, expensive process. A small business can expect to pay between $5,000–$15,000 for a redesign from a web design agency (Levitate, 2026). A large or custom project can take 6-12 months to complete (Connective Web Design, 2026). We built redesign.llc to offer a faster, more direct alternative.

Your Template Choice is About Structure, Not Content.

Every redesign starts with your existing content and images. We migrate them into the template you choose. This means you should ignore the placeholder text and stock photos in our previews. They are irrelevant. Instead, look at the structure—the bones of the page. How does the template organize information? Is the layout rigid and grid-based or more fluid and asymmetrical? Your content will fill this structure, so pick one that fits its shape.

1. Start with the Header Layout.

The header is the most permanent feature of your website. It appears on every page. Your choice here should be functional. Look at the navigation and logo placement.

  • Centered Logo: Creates a balanced, formal look. Good for brands with a strong, simple logo.
  • Left-Aligned Logo: The standard for most websites. Follows natural reading patterns (left-to-right).
  • Sticky Header: The navigation bar remains visible as the user scrolls. Ideal for content-heavy sites or if you want calls-to-action to always be accessible.

Consider how many navigation links you have. A template with a minimalist header won't work if you have ten top-level pages. Choose a header that fits your site's actual architecture.

2. Pick a Hero Section That Fits Your Core Message.

The hero section is the first full-screen view a visitor sees. It does the most work in the 50 milliseconds you have to make an impression (Google Research). It must align with your primary business goal.

  • Full-Width Image/Video: Immersive and visually driven. Best for brands selling an aesthetic, a destination, or a physical product.
  • Split Screen: Presents two distinct ideas, products, or calls-to-action with equal weight.
  • Text-Focused: A strong headline and subheading get straight to the point. Best for service businesses, consultants, or anyone selling a complex idea.

Don't focus on the specific image in the template. Focus on the container. Find a hero that frames your most important message correctly.

3. Find a Color Scheme and Typography You Like.

While our revision process allows for changes, starting with a template that already feels like your brand will accelerate the project. 46.1% of users judge a business's credibility based on website design (Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab, 2002). Color and typography are major components of that judgment. Find a template that has the right vibe—be it professional, playful, minimalist, or bold. This is a starting point. On our $99 plan you get three detailed revision rounds to fine-tune these elements; on $249 you get five.

4. Ignore Everything Else (For Now).

Do not get bogged down in the details of a template's inner sections. The footer, the contact form, the 'About Us' layout—all of it can be changed. Our process is designed for this flexibility.

  • Code + Revisions ($99): In your 3 revision rounds, you can ask us to tweak, keep, or redo any section.
  • Multi-template · Hosted ($249): You can combine up to 3 templates and get 5 revision rounds. Pick the header from one, the hero from another, and the footer from a third. We build a hybrid site for you.

Your initial choice is not a final commitment to every pixel. It's a high-level structural decision.

Our take

A template is not a cage. It's a starting point. We use them to accelerate the most time-consuming part of a redesign—initial setup. The real work happens in the revision rounds, where we tailor the design to your specific content and feedback to deliver a final, polished website in days, not months.

When this isn't right for you

  • You need a complex backend. We deliver clean, vanilla HTML/CSS/JS sites. We do not build sites that require server-side processing, user logins, e-commerce checkouts, or a content management system (CMS).
  • You need to manage content yourself. Our sites are static. You get the code and can host it anywhere, but updating content requires editing the HTML directly.
  • You have no existing website or content. Our process is a redesign. It relies on having an existing base of content and images to migrate. We can create new images, but we are not a copywriting or branding agency.
  • You want a long, exploratory design process. Our model is built for speed and decisiveness. If you want to A/B test dozens of concepts over several months, a traditional agency is a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

What if I like the header from one template and the body from another?
That's exactly what our Multi-template · Hosted plan is for. For $249, you can combine sections from up to 3 different templates. We'll build a unique site based on your selections, with 5 rounds of revisions, and have it live in 7 days.
Can I change the colors and fonts of a template?
Yes. Code + Revisions ($99) includes three detailed revision rounds and Multi-template ($249) includes five. You can use these to request tweaks to colors, fonts, spacing, or even ask us to redo entire sections.
Do I have to use my existing images and text?
We start by building the initial draft with your existing content and images, as this is the fastest way to see a realistic preview. On the $99 and $249 tiers, you can provide new text or images during the revision rounds. We can also create new images if needed.
